MILL STREET BRIDGE
Clearwater was awarded the partial design/build contract for the replacement of the historic South Mill Street Bridge over Neshannock Creek in the city of New Castle.
PennDOT directed the replacement of the 95-year-old structure due to safety and structural concerns.
The existing structure was a single-span, steel through truss bridge. Clearwater’s scope included demolition and replacement with a two-span multiple steel plate girder superstructure utilizing the existing abutments. A new pier was required which required the construction of a sheet-pile cofferdam with an overall height of +-20 ft. where soil liquefaction had to be considered and overcome. Bearing piles were then driven to bedrock within the confines of the cofferdam. Clearwater also replaced an existing wing wall with a pile foundation. This wall also required temporary shoring with ty-backs with a retained height of +-22 ft.
The concrete deck was 218 linear feet and had 3 different pour sequences along with sidewalks, concrete barrier with architectural form liner, ornamental guiderail and ornamental pedestrian railings. In addition, approach roadway, highway lighting and signalization were part of the overall construction.
As a result of its performance on the project, Clearwater was awarded the American Society of Highway Engineers “2014 Outstanding Highway Engineering Award”.
